Melon's Art

Postby Melon » January 21st, 2015, 10:07 am

So I've got some projects on the go.

A couple of Rays for AntiM's Home for Wayward Art have been completed and crated ready to go.

I'll be filling this thread with the next pieces of art I'm currently working on - involving gels and non-glass mirrors. To be continued!

Melon, I've gotta say, your rays will up the caliber at Anti M's Home.

Those are gorgeous; I'm a wee bit jealous of folks who craft beautiful things ...
YAY!

Those are really cool Mel! How do you physically make the rays, or do you cover your rays with your art?

They're made of fiberglass. But I didn't make the bodies. They were just black spray paint before I got them.

The bodies were rejected by my sister after a failed business venture. She bought them to hang in her tropical themed restaurant, and when that failed she was so angry and disappointed and hurt that she was going to throw them in the bin since they were just ugly reminders of a dream gone bad. But I asked if I could rescue them and transform them into something else. And so I sanded them down and reglazed, primed and painted with inks, acrylics, and mica.

I wanted to show her; my baby sister, that not everything needs to be thrown away just because something didn't go the way it was expected to. The worst of things can be made a little bit better if we just shift our perspective. Even ugly reminders can change into things worth looking at, if we let them.

Hehe can't see why not.

I was thinking I'd give fiberglass fabrication a try and make a handful of fishbones to "float" around camp.

Infuse the paint with high intensity phosphorescent pigment so they'll glow for a while after sunset and be all spooky boney fishes swimming around.

Gonna make some drafts this weekend.

Lazy Saturday Painting.

The weekends are really my only time to get dirty with a paintbrush.

But this weekend it's raining, which means I can't work on any big pieces which is frustrating. (my garage is my studio - isn't heated or ventilated unless I open the door...and it's too cold for that today)

So I'm hanging out at my desk in my office messing around with some heavy gloss glazes.

Phase 1 - Experiment Circles
- base coat of white guache
- penciled circles / added base matte colourblocks
- first layer of ink glaze.

15 phases more to go.

Phase 2 complete! (yes that's a cheeky coaster on my desk....gotta set my tea down somewhere!)

You and your art belong about 1,500 miles to the south. The colors and patterns are very characteristic of what I've seen in Mexican folk art:

Also picks up a lot on Mondrian. He was Dutch. Although he is known for his geometric paintings, he did a lot of modernistic stuff early in his career. One of my faves is "View from the Dunes".
And he had a great mustache.

This is tongue in cheek bus made humor as I'm suffering from a tummy ache (flu - hopefully not!!)
I was following this fight on ePlaya. cuz why not. My humor is often translated into imagery.

Every year I am asked to participate in a charity project to raise money for military family projects.

So I get blank military helmets to transform.

Here are my 3 submissions.
