Back in '99.
Friends said " Come to this camping thing. Look for the big silk flag flying near center camp."
Arrived 2AM Friday, in a rainstorm (that had been going on for hours).
in the muck without a clue.
Picked up an inner city hitchhiker that was high on ??? looking for LOVE camp.
Dumped her after half an hour, she was no help navigating the city.
Finally parked (3AM) and got out of the rental van in the rain to look for our friends. (Flags are NO GOOD at night in rain)
After an hour or so of " No, fuck off, we don't know your friends" at every socked in tent, we retreated to the van to sleep.
Next morning, 7AM, dry conditions.
Look out van windows to freaks in costumes riding bikes.
( I have EVERYTHING I need, and NONE of it is with me
Partner stopped a likely-looking sort, who said "You look familiar" ... turned out we were parked in our buddies' neighbor camp.
Two glorious days/nights with a cooler of crap food and an air mattress in the 'living room' of friends' camp, and I was hooked.
Next year, full blown theme camp with 80 participants and 24/7 entertainment on the Esplanade.
Making the yearly pilgrimage home, to a new world every time, and loving it.
