It's glad to be back on the board and it's great to see there is still mischief going on. I feel like the tin man in the wizard of oz, I couldn't remember my password... got that reset. I can't remember how to navigate anything, so I'm trying my hand at my first post back online here.

I've got soooo many pokers in the fire for this coming year and soooo few resources to get this all accomplished.

As you may have seen on eplaya, I have a placed project that I'm working on.

I'm also working on a personal propane puffer

I'm glad to be back online and look forward to re-investing my time with everyone.

You've caught me in my Defaultia attire. I swear on Larry's eventual headstone, I will never bring a button down shirt to the playa!

So the intent is to have a 10'x10'x10' cube and covering each side of the cube will be these interactive LED panels. Some panels will be user interactive analog panels like the one below in the music video and some will be user "instigated" that will kick off a program "Life" as developed by John Conway as show in the other video below.

The cube panels will have giant plexi panels on standoffs about an inch out from the boards. The boards work at night from user IR input and work well during the day from very long distances.

The supporting structures (triangles, for lack of knowledge on architectural terms) will be plywood to support the cube and will be decorated with "whatever" and that's totally up in the air right now.

FIRE NOTE: Speaking of fire. I built a big puffer last night. I'm hoping to set it off today and there might be some images to share later.

There was an interactive LED array on the Esplanade 3 years ago. It was awesome. It either used a camera or ultrasound sensors to detect movement. If you threw your hands above your head the LEDs lit up going up. the faster you did it, the higher they would go. If you threw your hands wide to the sides, the LEDs would light horizontally. You could throw your hands to the sides and "throw" light. It was amazing. I have tried to find a reference to it ever since. I would build it just to play with it if I could find it anywhere!

It may be more simple than you think. In the panels I'm using:

- Each panel is broken down into multiple quadrants that accept input from IR sensors that drive the LEDs for that quadrant.
- Through circuit design and software a portion of the input from one quadrant serves to drive the LEDs in an adjacent quadrant, only not as brightly.

Also as you move your hand, body, member, or whatever across the panels you leave one quadrant as you enter another, so with software you can create a ripple effect where the previous quadrant alternates between bright to dimmer successively as you vacate IR sensors in that quadrant until it's dim then off and the approaching quadrant goes from off to dim to bright successively as you approach it and directly provide input to it's IR sensors. It looks much like ripples created on a still body of water.

This may not be exactly what you saw, but it likely works in a similar fashion.

The panels that will be used for "Life" portion of the art project have other modes of operation and one of the modes creates this ripple effect described above.

I remember Animal coming home late one morning and totally amped at the interactive display.

Kowtow: if you do this, we'll never get Chuck out of the camp!!!! :)
