Wooden Nickel Necklaces

Postby kowtow » January 22nd, 2015, 6:36 pm

I'm going to make some wooden nickel necklaces to hand out this year.

It will be your typical wooden nickel branded with the following logo and then a faux leather or leather cord attached.

I've opted for a new design. I've got it quoted and will be ordering the brands and iron this week.

The brass branding plates have been ordered and I'm looking into something for the necklace cord/rope. I've looked at 2mm round leather cord, but it's expensive. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've got the fixin's for 1,000 necklaces (minus the necklace cord).

Found a store that has round 2mm leather rope at $11 per 25m spool. Considering I want to use 28" per necklace so I'm right at 35 necklaces per 25 meters spool. That means I need 29 spools (~$300) of leather rope to finish all the necklaces. Any cheaper solutions out there?

I'll look. I'm sure we can do it cheaper.

I will buy a couple of spools as samples and see how it works out and then I might splurge if we don't find something better.

I wondered about that, but would it be too abrasive on a persons neck?

What about that cotton cooking twine they use to tie up roasts? I think they call it Butchers string. It's soft enough for your neck and it would look like hemp rope. I don't know if that's the look your were going for though.

That's not bad and I bet it's dirt cheap and easy to get everywhere. If it's too small I guess I could braid it to give it more body.

Just to try out I've ordered:
Cotton Waxed Cord 2mm
Round Leather Cord 2mm
Bolo Leather Cord 5mm

Gang, I've got an idea, but we may need to chew on the details a little bit. In the next two weeks I'll be receiving the two branding irons for the wooden nickel necklaces/tokens. I've already got EVERYTHING else, wooden blanks, necklace rope, spring clips, heating iron, etc. for 1,000 trinkets. I'm planning on buying many, many more wooden blanks. I'm thinking at least another 1,000 or 2,000, hell even more if you guy's give me a hard on (pfluffer's now's your chance).

What do you think about putting a QR code sticker on these as we hand them out (away from our camp). The QR code could be something in "code" or it could have some random msg or trivia game/question, etc., fuck just let your mind wander on this for a second.

Remember the gang last year handing out the match game necklaces? Ya maybe we could do something like that with QR codes, or maybe some game where two unsuspecting people with our tokens get together, scan the QR code and the clue get's them say... a little closer to the answer and if they find a third person it add's another clue, four even closer...

I get that having a smartphone handy is (anti-burning man), fuck that. This adds a cool level of complexity to the fact there is a code you can't just figure out easily on the back of this token. You've gotta be resourceful and find a QR code reader and then figure out what the clue means, etc., etc., hehehehe even somewhat sadistic this is...

Think about it. We could print the QR codes on those little price tag meatballs. They are those stickers that are about the size of 3/4" to 7/8" in diameter and they are on all the crap you see at garage sales.

Okay enough of me. Give me your idea's and give me a hard on. I'm just looooooking for an excuse to buy enough tokens to hand out to say 10% of the population of BRC.

Goal - 7,000 tokens!!!

So the first one says "Fish Out Of Water", and the second is a URL link to this board.

Methinks you're on to something! :)

I'm thinking we could offer simple QR code clues...
"4:30"
"tamales"
"1/2 of a GPS Coordinate"
"Otterpoperita"
"Sunbeam"
"GreyCoyote"
"D"
"Melon"
"Elliot" (just to throw them off, but it still can apply as a clue)
"Fish Out Of Water"
"Glass Shower"
"Camera Hammock"
"Chuckularone'sssssssssssssssssss"
etc.,
etc.,
etc.,

Given the right circumstances we can create these QR codes on the playa and I could bring a laser printer to print them out as we come up with clues on the fly. Then as people are out and about they hand these fuckin' tokens out and let those peeps try and find us.

We could even "gift" out prizes and I hate to say it, I'm not opposed to handing out something crazy, stupid, fantastic if someone figures out some wicked hard difficult trivia fuckin' question.

Ummm... how about "Rich Princess?"

On a serious note, I like the direction this is going. Maybe it's not perfect for Burningman, but there could be some other uses!!!!
